Introduction of CSIAM
Founded in 1990, China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) is a non-governmental organization for Chinese applied mathematicians.
Supervised by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, CSIAM aims to bridge mathematics and the industrial and business communities, to promote cooperation between mathematicians and engineers, technicians as well as corporate managers, as well as to solve various mathematical problems hindering economic and technological development, and to further the research and education in applied mathematics. The current president of CSIAM is Pingwen Zhang. The former presidents are Shutie Xiao (1st), Qingcun Zeng (2nd), Daqian Li (3rd, 4th) and Lei Guo (5th, 6th).
Up to now, there are 16 regional societies for Industrial and Applied Mathematics across China. Each society carries out academic activities independently, leading the industrial and applied mathematics research in that region.
The working organizations of CSIAM are Advisory Committee, Organizing Committee, Development Foundation Committee, Academic Committee, Finance Committee, Publicity Committee, Education Committee, Prize Committee, Youth Committee, Science Popularization Committee, International Exchange Committee, Mathematical Modeling Contest Committee, Publication Committee, Enterprise Cooperation and Industrial Applications Committee, Activity Groups Management and Liaison Committee, Committee for Women in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and National Defense Innovation Committee, and CSIAM Office.
The Activity Groups of CSIAM are Mathematical Modeling, Sports Mathematics, Numerical Methods for Petroleum and Groundwater Resources, Methematical Systems and Control, Geometric Design and Computing, Climate and Environment Mathematics, Complex Networks and Complex Systems, Graph Theory and Combinatorics with Applications, Mathematical Life Science, Financial Mathematics,Financial Engineering and Actuarial Science, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, High Performance Computing and Mathematical Software, Uncertainty Quantification, Mathematics and Industry, Mathematics and Medicine Interdisciplinary , Blockchain, Coding, Cryptography and related Combinatorics, Math in information and communications technology, Mathematical Mechanic, Financial Technology and Algorithm, Mathematics and Space Interdisciplinary, and Inverse Problems and Imaging.
CSIAM has six research journals, namely, CSIAM Transactions on Applied Mathematics, Journal of Mathematical Research with Applications, Chinese Journal of Engineering Mathematics, Annals of Applied Mathematics, Applied Mathematics-A Journal of Chinese Universities, and Mathematical Modeling and Its Applications.
CSIAM awards five prizes, the CSIAM Su Buchin Prize, the CSIAM Xiao Shutie Prize, the CSIAM Wu Wentsun Prize, the CSIAM Wang Xuan Prize, and the CSIAM Young Scholar Prize.
As a large member in the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), CSIAM actively supports and participates in the world-wide industrial and applied mathematics activities. In 2015, the 8th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics was successfully held in Beijing by CSIAM. China Vice-President Yuanchao Li attended the congress opening ceremony, giving a speech, and awarding the ICIAM Lagrange Prize, the ICIAM Collatz Prize, the ICIAM Pioneer Prize, the ICIAM Maxwell Prize, and the ICIAM Su Buchin Prize. Over 3400 scholars from 68 countries participated in the conference, while more than 3000 academic reports covered not only all aspects of applied mathematics but also the most recent advances in the interdisciplinary research of math and physics, mechanics, chemistry, optics, biology, medicine, economics, information science, geography, ocean and atmosphere science, environment science, finance, aerospace, material science, manufacturing and transportation. The number of reports and the number of participants both hit a record high. This congress fully demonstrates China's achievements in the research and education of industrial and applied mathematics, and greatly fosters the cooperation between math and China's science and technology as well as national economy.
Since 1992, CSIAM has held China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling annually, with the support from the Ministry of Education of the P.R.C. This contest provides a good opportunity for students to develop creative thinking, problem-solving abilities as well as team-work spirit.
CSIAM is always ready to joint efforts with mathematicians in the world arena for a brilliant future of industrial and applied mathematics.
