Shutie Xiao is one of the earliest scholars on applied mathematics research and education in China. Not only had he made distinguished achievements in applied mathematics, but he had also made important contributions to the mathematics education at the college level. Shutie Xiao is also one of the major founders of both CSIAM and Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, making contributions to the popularization and development of applied mathematics in China. The Xiao Shutie Applied Mathematics Fund is founded in memory of the late mathematician Shutie Xiao, who had been promoting applied mathematics throughout his life.
The major source of the Fund is the donation from the teachers and friends of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tsinghua University. The ceremony means the raise of the first sum of money, as well as the launch of CSIAM Xiao Shutie Prize, one of the Fund-supported projects. CSIAM Xiao Shutie Prize was approved at the Executive Council's 8th meeting of the CSIAM 6th Council on January 23, 2016. The Prize money and related judging fees is provided by the Fund.
