2017 New Year Meeting of Mathematical Sciences Community held in Beijing
The 2017 New Year Meeting of mathematical sciences community is held in Peking University on the morning of January 14, 2017. It is the 12th new year meeting co-hosted by the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS), the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM), and Tianyuan Mathematics Foundation Leading Group.
More than 90 guests attend the meeting, including the leaders of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the leaders and members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the executive council members of CMS and CSIAM, the Mathematics Division director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), some universities leaders and specially invited guests. The meeting is co-chaired by the CMS secretary-general, Prof. Dayue Chen, and the CSIAM secretary-general, Researcher Guiying Yan.
The CAS Academician Ya-xiang Yuan (the CMS president and the director of the Tianyuan Mathematics Foundation Leading Group) first makes a speech. He introduces the 2016 work and the 2017 plan of CMS, as well as the news about the Tianyuan Mathematics Foundation.
The CAS Academician and CSIAM president Pingwen Zhang mentions that applied mathematics plays an important role in advancing science and technology at home and abroad, and applied mathematicians should be confident and prepared to face with challenges and opportunities. On behalf of CSIAM, he wishes everyone a happy new year, and expresses his gratitude to the leaders and professionals who have been supporting the CSIAM work for a long time.
The minister Jun Song of CAST says that mathematics as a basic subject is of absolute importance, and CAST is always ready to serve the mathematicians.
The Mathematics Division director Qingguo Meng of NSFC introduces the work about mathematics in 2016. He says that mathematics is one of the first three subsidized programs in NSFC Basic Science Center, which fully demonstrates mathematics plays a critical role in interdisciplinary studies. He also wishes the mathematicians actively apply for the NSFC programs.
The deputy director Min Huang of CAS Bureau of Frontier Sciences and Education says CAS will continue to support the development of mathematics.
The CAS Academicians deliver a series of talks, emphasizing the importance of education, interdisciplinary research, as well as the down-to-earth character at work. They point out the scholars doing interdisciplinary research of mathematics and other disciplines to solve real-world problems should be considered as mathematicians, and we need to be united with them. In recent years, mathematics research has made great progress. Nowadays, the rapid development of sci-tech is closely related with mathematicians' work. We have done a good job in many aspects. Therefore we should be confident.
Guests from universities, mathematics societies, companies and mathematics journals all around China also give talks. The meeting comes to a successful conclusion.
