The 5th China Mathematics Popularization Forum held in Shanghai
On April 14-16, the 5th China Mathematics Popularization Forum is held in Shanghai Xingzhi High School. The theme of the forum is Mathematics and Future Technology. The forum is hosted by Shanghai University and Shanghai Baoshan District Education Bureau. CSIAM is a co-sponsor.
Nearly 1,000 teachers, students and mathematicians from all over China take part in the forum. CSIAM president Pingwen Zhang attends the opening ceremony and gives a welcome speech.
Pingwen Zhang delivers a talk on The Evolution of Computing. He begins with a few daily matters to show how closely our life is related with computing. Then, he gives a lively introduction of numbers, numeration system, operational symbols, computing tools and computational methods. He also explains the value and beauty of computing. Finally he describes the modes of future computing as well as their impact on human society.
CSIAM organizes the following speeches:
1. The Dream of René Descartes—from Descartes Geometry to Mathematics Mechanization, by Wenlin Li (Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences)
2. From Seeing to Discovery, by Tianxin Cai (Zhejiang University)
3. The Intuition, Quality and Interest in Learning Mathematics, by Jinlong Shu (East China Normal University)
4. Game Theory in Daily Life, by Xudong Hu (Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences)
These talks enlighten the teachers and students with various mathematics knowledge, the newest trend in mathematics research, and the proper ways in learning mathematics.

In the afternoon, the middle school students from top Shanghai schools report their research in the Shanghai Adolescents Scientific Innovation Practice Center. The mathematicians make comments on their research and give advice.
The China Mathematics Popularization Forum aims to spread the mathematics knowledge, facilitate the adolescents to communicate with the mathematicians, and develop the students' interest in learning mathematics.
With continuous efforts on mathematics popularization, CSIAM is committed to cultivating the adolescents' passion for science and inspiring their scientific innovation.
